I saw Superman three days early and…

I saw the new Superman movie three days early, and I have to say, this is the most comic book superhero movie I have ever seen.

This is my non-spoiler review of the new James Gunn Superman film — a movie I’ve been curious, excited, and honestly a little nervous about.

I got to see Superman early thanks to the special screening held by Amazon for Prime users. This is the fourth movie I’ve seen in IMAX in my entire life, and what an experience it was.

Coming into this movie, I was worried it wasn’t going to look good. In the trailers, it looked like the film was going to have some weird saturated look, but it was quite the opposite. I don’t know how to explain it, but it simply looked like a comic book—like if you were to rip the pages straight out of a Superman comic book.

I heard a lot of bad things before watching the movie, and one of them was that the CGI was The Flash-levels of bad, but it truly wasn’t. It looked fine. Like all CGI, it did look choppy at times, but nothing rubbery or distracting.

Besides the look, the movie knew how to balance a lot of characters really well. This movie had about seven side characters, but it didn’t feel overcrowded. It felt like a Superman movie that has heroes already established in it.

“The Justice Gang,” composed of Guy Gardner, Green Lantern, Mr. Terrific, and Hawkgirl, felt perfectly in place in this new universe. The chemistry between everybody felt real and natural. Superman has already been a hero for about three years during this film. He is roughly 30 years old and is not the only hero on this planet—let alone the universe.

Clark Kent and Lois Lane’s chemistry felt so realistic—like a new relationship where both sides don’t really know how to be in a relationship, but there’s mutual love, so they try and figure it out. Jimmy Olsen and Perry White were both funny and interesting. As a journalist who has worked in newsrooms, the Daily Planet was spot-on in how a newsroom really operates. Lois Lane interviewing Superman with tough questions is exactly what a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist should do.

This was by far the best Clark Kent we have ever seen on the big screen. David Corenswet did an amazing job. For a little while, movies depicted Superman as a lifeless alien. Although he is an alien, he was also raised on Earth since birth—so he is essentially a human, and this movie touches on that.

Lex Luthor felt so evil, and I hated him—not because the character was portrayed badly, but because he was just so bad and evil. He really hates Superman, and I wish the movie touched a little more on that, but you do understand why Lex doesn’t like him. Ever since Gene Hackman’s portrayal of Lex, I haven’t seen anyone do the character justice—until now. I wasn’t sure about Nicholas Hoult’s casting at first, but now I can’t wait to see more of him.

I wish I were a little kid again just so I could see this movie for the first time—because that’s exactly how I felt while watching it. Like a little kid with a big imagination who believes I can fly, who believes there can be a Superman. Although I can’t complain—I got to see Man of Steel on the big screen when I was 10.

Overall, I really enjoyed this movie. It caught me by surprise, and I recommend everybody watch it. You don’t need to know anything going into this movie—just sit back and escape for two hours.
